Unai Emery has little funds to strengthen his Arsenal squad with less than two weeks remaining in the January transfer window.

The Spaniard strengthened his squad heavily during the summer window leaving little funds in the bank for new additions during the current transfer period. Instead, the Gunners will have to focus on loan deals in order to add to their ranks.

With Mesut Ozil facing an uncertain future at the club, the sale of the German playmaker could provide Emery with some valuable funds to use in the final fortnight of the window. Emery will also soon need to begin his search for Aaron Ramsey’s replacement with the Welshman expected to leave the club at the end of his contract in the summer.

The ideal replacement would be Schalke wonderkid – Weston McKennie. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the 20-year-old moved to the Bundesliga back in 2016 on a free transfer after leaving FC Dallas. McKinnie initially joined up the U19 squad but his impressive performances saw him quickly promoted to the first-team where he has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season.

His quality showings have not gone unnoticed with Liverpool reportedly (as per the Sun) keen to lure the youngster to Anfield – Arsenal should do all they can to beat them to his signature. McKennie thrives a deep-lying playmaker, offering the defence protection whilst also dictating the tempo of the game. The midfielder is also hugely versatile, capable of playing in a more advanced role or even as a centre back. Alongside Lucas Torreira in the engine room, McKennie would thrive.

The youngster is still developing and improving – under Emery’s tutelage he could become an Arsenal great.
