Why Arsenal will not win the Premier League unless they do this in January

When Arsenal signed Shkodran Moustafi, Granit Xhaka and, to a lesser extent, Lucas Perez in the summer of this season you felt that they’d pretty much assembled a squad to win the league.

Indeed, they looked to have finally heard the requests of their fans to sign players in each of those three’s positions and as the season kicked off – the Liverpool result aside – things were looking good.

Over the past few weeks, though, things have not been plain sailing for Arsenal with mistakes and poor performances creeping in leaving, once again, the need in particular for one position to be improved – left back.

Monreal has shown he is out of his depth repeatedly this season.

Whilst it would be wrong to suggest that Nacho Monreal is the soul cause of Arsenal’s recent slips it would also be wrong to not acknowledge that out of all the Gunners’ title rivals, they have the worst starter in that position.

Manchester City and Liverpool have had doubts cast over their left backs this season but both Gael Clichy and the surprisingly good James Milner would get into the Gunners’ team – let alone the other left backs in the title race.

Monreal has shown at times again this season that he simply is not top drawer and has been exposed a number of times this year.

Man City beat Arsenal in December thanks to weak defending from him allowing Raheem Sterling to get the winner whilst he had a torrid time against Man United at Old Trafford.

He’s never put in a performance, either, where you’ve gone ‘that was good,’ and for a team challenging for the league, that is nowhere near enough.

Monreal fluctuates between average and poor and if Arsenal do not replace him this month, their summer work would have all been for nothing.
