The Aston Villa fans have been dreaming of promotion in the Transfer Tavern of late after their side all but secured their place in the Championship playoffs by claiming a 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Villa Park on Friday evening.
Although mathematically it is still possible for Villa to drop out of the promotion places, it’s fair to say that their place is secure with 3 fixtures left to play. There’s even a slim chance that they could catch Cardiff in 2nd place, but they remain 4 points behind the Welsh club having played one match more.
It seems unlikely that they will move into the automatic places, but the certainty of finishing inside the playoff places means Steve Bruce’s side will have an excellent opportunity to return to the top-flight in May. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the resident Villans propping up our bar have already begun discussing a handful of potential signings to make if they manage to achieve promotion this season.
Although it would undoubtedly be an audacious transfer to complete, the Villa supporters should be hoping that their club can complete a deal for Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere (valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt) this summer, as he possesses a level of quality which should enable the club to steer clear of survival.
Wilshere’s future at Arsenal has been in doubt for the vast majority of the season so far and, the fact he’s set to become a free agent this summer should encourage Villa to at least consider the possibility of bringing him to Villa Park.
Naturally, Wilshere’s wage demands could represent a potential stumbling block in negotiations between club and player, but if Villa want to solidify their place in the top-flight they will need to splash the cash on players of genuine talent, such as Wilshere.
The 26-year-old England international possesses the ability to single-handedly dictate proceedings in midfield and bring the best out of the players around him with his intelligent link-up play and incisive creativity, so Villa would be foolish not to do everything in their power to complete a marque signing in the summer.
Villa’s interest in Wilshere obviously depends on the outcome of the Championship playoffs, but if they are successful in returning the Premier League this season then Steve Bruce and the Villa hierarchy should do everything in their power to secure his signature.
