Chelsea look set to swoop for Arsenal’s primary transfer target Eden Hazard with a £22m bid. Lille have placed a £26m price tag on the midfielder’s head but are likely to accept any offer above £20m.
Arsenal have long been linked with Hazard and his ex-Lille team mate Gervinho who completed a move to the Emirates earlier this summer. Arsenal fans have been dreaming of the two being reunited to produce the sort of explosive attacking that saw Lille outscore all opponents and win the French title at a canter.
Perhaps not quite the replacement for Cesc Fabregas, Hazard would certainly fill the void created by Samir Nasri’s departure. Hazard’s lightning pace and superb dribbling ability would make him the ideal candidate for Arsenal’s left-wing spot.
However, it seems once again that Arsene Wenger’s characteristic transfer market hesitance has cost him again. Andre Villas-Boas is another manager with a need to replenish his midfield and more importantly, far more willing to invest big to get his man.
Chelsea have considered Hazard as a back-up plan in the event of their Luka Modric pursuit proving unsuccessful. For the time being at least, it seems as if Tottenham have done enough to keep their man. And credit to them for that.
A bid upwards of £20m should do the job for Chelsea, but Hazard is fast becoming a player neither London side can afford to miss out on.
