Arsenal’s ideal month of June: Sokratis signs, another Juventus star joins Emery revolution

Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are delighted to see their summer recruitment drive in full flow with Unai Emery set to put the final touches on his first signing as Arsenal manager.

The former PSG boss has wasted no time in revamping the Arsenal squad after taking the reins from Arsene Wenger. Working closely with the head of recruitment Sven Mislintat, Emery looks to set to raid Mislantat’s former club Borussia Dortmund once again. The Gunners signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the German side in January and are now in prime position to seal a £16m deal for Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

In an ideal world, the Greek would join imminently and Emery would look to raid Juventus once again as he looks to complete his backline. Clearly, the murky world of football transfers never works in ideals, though it certainly would get Emery off to a good start in north London.

Defence was identified as a key area for improvement following some poor showings last year. With Laurent Koscielny sidelined for a number of months, another defender may be on the way to North London given Shkodran Mustafi’s inconsistent performances. The man Arsenal should target is Juventus’s Medhi Benatia.

Valued at £20.7m by Transfermarkt, the Moroccan international has been a mainstay for the Old Lady since joining from Bayern Munich in 2016. Many clubs are interested in his services according to reports in Italy and Juve are set to move for Alessio Romagnoli if Benatia decides to leave.

The 31-year-old is a defensive rock – precisely what Arsenal need to sure up their defence. He started just 20 games in the Serie A under Max Allegri, and his physical approach to defending makes him perfect for the Premier League.
