With Ivan Gazidis having resigned as chief executive at Arsenal to join AC Milan, Raul Sanllehi has taken up a new role as head of football at the north London club.
And the Spaniard has already gotten to work on potential signings for the next transfer window with a certain Sevilla player being lined up.
According to the Sun, Sanllehi wants to reunite Unai Emery with Argentina playmaker Ever Banega.
The 30-year-old is said to have an £18m release clause in his Sevilla contract and, if Arsenal choose to activate it, they will undoubtedly be getting a quality midfield player.
£10.8m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Banega has been one of the most consistent midfielders in La Liga over the last few years — with a strong season at Inter Milan coming in between — and would add to what has already become a decent looking midfield under Emery.
The Sevilla man is brilliant at picking out team-mates in dangerous areas of the pitch from his own half and, at the World Cup, his eventual introduction elevated an underperforming Argentina team to a more acceptable level.
With Aaron Ramsey’s future at the club becoming increasingly uncertain, Arsenal may need to dip into the market for another offensive-minded midfielder with Banega — albeit not a like-for-like — a suitable replacement.
In Matteo Guendouzi — although he has shown he is capable of making key passes — and Lucas Torreira, Arsenal have two promising individuals in the defensive midfield mould.
And Banega with his playmaker skills could complement the pair perfectly, in contrast to the error-prone Granit Xhaka.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
