During the summer, Arsenal’s recruitment drive under new boss Unai Emery was largely focused on reinforcing the midfield.

To do so, Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira were brought in with the former, in particular, impressing during this early part of the season.

However, despite the arrival of the pair, the Gunners could yet move for another midfielder when the transfer window opens again in January.

The Breakdown

Following the resignation of Ivan Gazidis as chief executive, Raul Sanllehi has taken up the new role of head of football, and one of his first major actions could be to reunite Emery with his former player at Sevilla, the £10.8m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Ever Banega.

According to the Sun, Arsenal are interested in triggering the £18m release clause in the Argentina international’s contract in a move that not everyone at the club would welcome.

There is no denying Banega’s ability; he is a gifted playmaker who would bring much to the team. And given Aaron Ramsey’s current contract situation, there is logic behind Arsenal’s reported interest.

The north London club, though, have a bunch of young talented midfielders who are more than capable of making the step up to the first team on a permanent basis.

The likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Joe Willock are known to be highly rated by the club, and the arrival of Banega will only halt the good progress they have made over the last 12 months.

While Banega, no doubt, would be a good signing for Arsenal, it is one that would not come without its consequences.
