Despite Arsenal finishing last season strongly, Arsene Wenger could not escape criticism from the Gooners in the Transfer Tavern as he failed to maintain his top four track record.
Yes, Arsenal finished outside the Champions League places for the first time in since 1996, and the club were dealt a double dose of loneliness when Manchester United qualified for the competition via Europa League success.
The 5th place finish saw the Gunners boss under acrimonious pressure, with Arsenal fans calling for his head. ‘No new contract’ was the message from the ARsenal fans here in the Transfer Tavern.
But then Arsenal lifted the FA Cup and the anger turned to jubilation – one week later the club announced a new two-year deal for the Frenchman.
So far, the 67-year-old has enjoyed one of his best summers at the club.
Arsenal have recruited a new left-back in Sead Kolasinac – the 24-year-old Bosnian was known as the assist machine in Germany after bagging nine for Schalke last season.
And Wenger has finally landed Alexandre Lacazette – the man forever linked with Arsenal was Atletico Madrid bound, but his move to Spanish capital fell through and it gave the Gunners the kick up the backside they needed and as they swooped in to pay Lyon a club record fee for the striker.
Lacazette was prolific last season netting a staggering 37 times in 45 games for the Ligue 1 side.
Alexis Sanchez’s contract situation remains a worry – the club must do all they can to avoid him going to a Premier League rival at all costs.
Though, Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain appear more likely to remain at The Emirates this season.
It’s great news for Arsenal fans who are anticipating a much improved season.
If Wenger can secure another winger and a new understudy for Petr Cech, Arsenal can be serious contenders this season.
