Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern hope that Arsenal can make their presence felt in the upcoming transfer window as talkSPORT reveal that they will battle it out with Atletico Madrid to land Lyon captain Maxime Gonalons.
Both of the European heavyweights have kept tabs on the 25-year-old who has had an impressive season patrolling Les Gones’ midfield just in front of the back four.
A defensive midfielder, as we know already, is something that Arsenal have needed for a long time despite Francis Coquelin’s recent emergence in the Gunners’ first team.
The French youngster has come on leaps and bounds and has made the most interceptions in European football this calendar year but our resident Gooners feel they still need reinforcements in this area.
Because although Coquelin has shown positive signs, they will need cover in that position because at the age of 23, he would benefit from an elder mentor.
Also in this position, players are prone to picking up bookings so there will be inevitably be suspensions making reinforcements even more important.
Gonalons would vast experience of having captained Lyon and at 25, he has a huge a long career ahead of him yet.
The Gunners have been long-term admirers of the Frenchman with Diego Simeone’s Atleti becoming recently interested but it will take a lot to tempt him from Ligue 1.
