Surprise surprise, Arsenal are getting closer to completing the signing of young French defender Mamadou Sakho from PSG, a shock this is not, there were rumblings through January that this might go through sooner than the Summer but it now appears a deal is being struck for the end of the season.
The deal would cost Wenger a hefty £12.7million considering Sakho is relatively unproven and lacking in big league experience, the twenty year old will supposedly earn around £13,000 a week.
At only 20 he has already shown leadership quality and has captained PSG on numerous occasions, the first being when he was 17 and he holds the record for the youngest captain in Ligue 1. He also made his international debut for France against England in November 2010. On the flipside of things he has been in trouble for slapping a French journalist so there is clearly a bit of the Emmanuel Eboue about him…
The deal seems a bit of a gamble to me, Wenger could do with someone in the heart of his back 4 with English experience who his not afraid of getting stuck in, rather than the assortment of Europeans he currently has who don’t enjoy a rainy afternoon dealing with Delap throw-ins.
Before he signed a new contract I thought Chris Samba from Blackburn would have been a great addition to the Arsenal backline. Sakho, who can also play at left back, has played 85 games for PSG in 4 years and has potential, but I think Wenger might look for another more experienced centreback in the Summer to add to his existing pool of Vermaelen, Koscielny, Squillaci and Djourou. If this is the case it could lead to the exit of a couple, most likely Djourou and Squillaci who has flattered to deceive so far this term.
