This time however, the player in question is a little older than previous players to switch from the Catalan capital to London.
Last week, Wenger’s move for Barcelona youngster Jon Toral was branded ‘immoral’ by the powers that be at the Spanish giants. Even though there didn’t seem to be a huge amount wrong with that deal Wenger could be risking the wrath of Barcelona again, although this time I am almost certain there will be nothing controversial in that the player is 24 year old Victor Vazquez.
Vazquez joined Barcelona at 9 years old and progressed through the youth ranks, he first appeared for the B side during the 2006-2007 season at 19 years old. It is with the B side that he has stayed for the majority of his career, he has made a few appearances for the first team, 3 in total spread across four seasons, and he has scored 1 goal in those games in a European fixture.
He has struggled to break through into the first team and like many attacking midfielders that Barcelona have had over recent years he is another who didn’t crack the first team and may now have to look further afield for regular first team football.
At 24, it seems unlikely that he will be offered a new deal with the club this Summer when his current one expires and a move to somewhere that he could become a first team regular would be extremely beneficial. Arsenal are thought to be the closest to his signature and Blackburn were very interested in the player during the January transfer window. There are also a few unnamed Spanish clubs watching the player.
The 24 year old who can play on the wing and as an attacking midfielder obviously needs first team football and that for me is why I question whether Arsenal would be a good choice. It seems unlikely to me that Wenger would be interested in the first place, they are competing with Barcelona, so why would they want a player who couldn’t get close to their first team, especially someone who is 24 years old. Blackburn I can see as a much more suitable destination for the player, he is more likely to be at their level should they make a move for the player.
Obviously however it would be wrong to question Wenger when it comes to transfers, he generally gets them right and this one wouldn’t cost anything, so maybe there is something in it. Only time will tell, so watch this space.
