Arsenal are contemplating a move for young Ukrainian international Yaroslav Rakytskyy after Arsene Wenger has had him scouted just before the season broke off for the winter break.
The Shakhtar Donetsk centre back featured in 37 games last season and is seen has a future captain of the national team. The 21 year old can either play in the middle of defence or at left back.
Arsenal desperately need defensive reinforcements but Wenger does not favour buying in January with high valuations placed on players. He is more favoured to wait till the summer where he can negotiate a lower price for the defender.
Rakytskyy has many attributes to be a success in the Premier League, strong and quick with an eye for goal, and while not the finished article there will be no better place for the young prospect to succeed than at Arsenal. He would provide adequate competition for young defender Johan Djourou.
The defender could cost up to £7.5 million which, while an expensive prospect could become another rising Eastern European star following in the footsteps of Andrei Arshavin and Nemanja Vidic. No doubt Wenger will be able to nurture and bring out the best in him.
