Inter Milan boss Claudio Ranieri is set to make an audacious bid for Arsenal’s Alexander Song in the January transfer window. The Italians are eager to sign a defensive midfielder as they currently sit just above the relegation zone in Serie A. The proposed figure is rumoured to be around £15m, but the likelihood of this deal being completed is very low.
Song has cemented his place in the Arsenal side of late, so unless Arsene Wenger brings in a couple of midfielders in January he is likely to remain a regular. Therefore the Cameroon international will probably want to stay at the Emirates as Wenger seems to have him very much in his plans.
Another midfielder in Wenger’s plans is his summer target Yann M’Vila, who announced last week that he wants to leave Rennes. Arsenal made a failed bid of £20m in the summer but may make a fresh bid for the 21-year-old after this encouraging statement.
However, Wenger may have to wait until the latter part of next summer as M’Vila said: “I feel ready to leave now. I just don’t think it’s a good idea with Euro 2012 coming up.”
The price could also put Arsenal off as Rennes would be able to hold out for a bigger fee due to the length of his current contract, which runs until 2015. Especially when clubs that can offer significantly more money may also be interested, such as Chelsea and Manchester City.
Patrick Viera, who acts as a football development executive at City, told French TV channel Canal+: “I like the image he [M’Vila] is showing. But I am sure City is not the only club attracted by him.”
The player will probably remain at Rennes until the summer, after that it could come down to who has the deepest pockets, or whether M’Vila prefers watching from the bench or playing regular football but for slightly less wages.
