Arsenal are rumoured to be courting German defender Per Mertesacker following a statement made by the defender yesterday.
Mertesacker, 25, is seen as an ideal solution to Arsene Wenger’s growing defensive problems with William Gallas looking likely to depart and Sol Campbell currently considering an offer from Celtic.
The defender has been quoted as saying that it would be an ‘attractive’ prospect, though it is just as likely he’ll settle for any club guaranteed to feature in next years Champions League: “There are certainly attractive clubs abroad. In particular ones who have been playing in the Champions League for many years.”
Considering his current club, Werder Bremen, will have to play a qualifier to gain entry to Europe’s premier competition, there should be little surprise that he has tested the waters elsewhere just in case the team fails to do so.
Anyhow, Werder coach Laus Allofs, has, rather unsurprisingly, warned off the Frenchman’s chase. Whether this will have any effect on his attempts remains to be seen, but already the move looks unlikely.
Arsene will want the move tied up before the World Cup, before the defender’s stocks increase. Incidentally, it was following his performance in Germany’s 2006 Word Cup team that Mertesacker made his move from Hannover 96 to Werder Bremen and the German may use South Africa as a platform to create greater interest among potential suitors once again.
