I certainly don’t think so, and according to French media he is going to return and try to sign one of the best young defensive prospects in the country. The Gunners were strongly linked with Mapou Yanga-M’Biwa over the Summer when they ultimately signed Sebastien Squillaci, and now they are watching the African born Frenchman once again with a view to a Summer move.
M’Biwa joined the French side Montpellier as part of their youth side in 2005 at 16 years of age, he went on to make his debut for the first team in February 2007. It was at the end of that season that the player signed his first professional contract and was promoted to the first team squad full time.
When he was 18, the right back finally became a first team regular after appearing mostly from the substitute bench, and he went on to become a key player for the club playing 112 games in 4 seasons. He eventually signed a new contract in 2009 that would last until 2012, and now one of the sides prime assets in May last year the player signed another 12 month extension keeping him contracted until 2013.
Whilst he mostly plays at right back, M’Biwa has at times played right along the back 4 with a good degree of success, his physical attributes have made him a great prospect. He is quick which helps him counter pacey wingers, he is strong and very difficult to get around, and his height and dominance in the air mean that he is particularly useful both defending and attacking set plays. He is rapidly learning despite his young age and playing alongside experienced defenders he is adding to his game all the time.
Arsenal watched the player closely last Summer and sent their head scout and club legend Giles Grimandi to watch the 21 year old, and it now appears they are having members of their team watch him again. He may only be in his second season of top flight football in France, but he has already shown that he can excel and he has now got experience of European football after the side played in the Europa League this season.
If a deal can be done, I think it would be a fantastic move for all involved. The player is one of the hottest defensive prospects in Ligue 1 and is there a better club for him to further improve his game than at the Emirates? Definitely not in my mind. As for the club, if the player does continue to learn at the current rate then he will go on to be a fine asset for the team and can go on to be a vital part of their defence in the future.
There has also supposedly been interest from Tottenham and Liverpool as well, but I cannot see many outcomes than him ultimately being an Arsenal player should they pursue their initial interest, it seems to be a perfect fit!
