Arsenal supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are expecting the additions of star players following their league disappointment last season.
Failure to qualify for the Champions League set an infamous record for Arsene Wenger last season, the first time that he has failed to qualify for the most coveted club competition in world football since 1996. Indeed, this failure served as a bitter disappointment for the Arsenal faithful, albeit, their cries for new signings have been met.
Arsenal’s need for a world-class striker has been apparent for a considerable amount of time. Alas, their calls were answered with the presence of club-record signing, Alexandre Lacazette. 16 minutes into his debut, the Frenchman scored his first goal in the iconic red shirt.
Now their need for a world-class defender must also be met. The signature of Sead Kolasinac has undoubtedly provided versatility and a touch of class to the Gunners’ defence, yet they must pursue talents of greater repute, Virgil van Dijk is one such player.
The 26-year-old has testified his reputation as one of the best defensive talents in the Premier League following his arrival at Southampton from Celtic. In 68 appearances for the Saints, the Dutchman has scored a total of seven goals.
Southampton’s Dutch defender has led by example since his arrival on the South Coast. Despite his large frame and commanding nature, he is surprisingly composed when in possession exhibiting great desire to dribble with the ball.
He’s incredibly dominant when participating in aerial duels, and his intercepting ability is also remarkable. His arrival could also enable Wenger to utilise the 3-4-2-1 as his permanent formation, a back three of Mustafi, Koscielny and Van Dijk would be one of the best defensive units in the league.
His signature may warrant a substantial fee, but our landlord believes that he’s worth every penny.
