Going forward it is obvious Arsenal are as good as any team in world football, defensively however they are shocking. 22 goals have been shipped in 21 games, and several have been sloppy costing them victories as the Wigan game did last week.
This is a problem which Arsene Wenger has addressed already this season and new signings Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci have both failed to stamp their authority alongside Thomas Vermaelen at the heart of their defence.
They are however negotiating with Liverpool over a proposed transfer for Danish international Daniel Agger. He is a player who is probably the best centre back on the ball in the premier league along with Rio Ferdinand. He will fit Arsenal’s system by picking out a good pass to the midfield in order to set up attacks.
So what’s he like defensively? He is a bit suspect in my opinion. He tends to lack concentration and he’s not really the leader the Gunners are looking for. They need another Tony Adams to boss the defence and lead by example.
On the plus side Agger can play at left back too and he does read the game well so maybe a partnership with Vermaelen may blossom into something decent. The facts don’t lie however and the two summer signings are not strong enough to cope in the premier league .
Liverpool fans like the Dane however and feel he should be a regular feature in the team but Roy Hodgson doesn’t play him too often. It is a risky signing under these circumstances and maybe Arsene Wenger should be looking at proven centre backs as he does have the money available to splash.
