The Daily Mail suggests that interest in a possible domestic transfer interest is hotting up…
Gael Clichy is keeping Arsenal guessing on whether he’ll sign a new contract with the Gunners when the season comes to an end. Whilst no definite decision has been made yet as to whether or not the Frenchman will choose to continue his Arsenal career, manager Arsene Wenger is clearly starting to scout around for possible replacements.
Top of the list is Everton’s Leighton Baines. The England left-back has already been linked with moves to Liverpool and Bayern Munich this summer, and Everton fans should quite rightly feel a little nervous about where the player’s future lies. I’m not suggesting that Baines is going anywhere, I’m just saying there’s a strong possibility.
Everton fans awoke on Saturday morning to some good news, with David Moyes announcing in the press that he had no intention of jumping ship. He had been linked with the Aston Villa job in recent weeks, but his announcement came as a welcome relief for the Toffees. Moyes did say that he was expecting major investment in the club during the summer, something that is desperately needed at Goodison Park.
Moyes, Everton fans and everyone else associated with the Grand Old club, know that if they are to survive they need to invest heavily in the squad this summer. They’ve done well again this season by making the best of what they have and sometimes scraping games on sheer determination and pluck. Evertonians have become used to this, even fond of it. But they know that if Everton are to progress they need money in the bank, and that can only come from one thing.
With Jack Rodwell linked with a £15 million move to Manchester United, and Baines leaving for £10 million that would give Moyes £25 million in his hand to spend on bringing in 2-3 decent players. The question is, would he be prepared to take the gamble?
Baines has been one of Everton’s outstanding performers for a long time, and I think they’d be mad to let him leave for anything less than £15 million. Not only is he excellent defensively, he’s a major threat from free-kicks, already getting Everton out of some sticky situations this season by pulling off a mind-blower from outside the area. Needless to say, his loss would be keenly felt by Everton fans.
But what a signing it would be for Arsenal?!
