Arsenal have reportedly won the race to sign Southampton’s latest boy wonder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the youngster is set to follow in his predecessor Theo Walcott’s footsteps and join the Gunners ranks.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, 17, has earned rave reviews this season as the Saints are flying high in second spot in Npower League 1 and are widely expected to return to the Championship at the second time of asking.
The pacey midfielder has attracted massive interest from Premier League big guns Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool in recent times. Arsenal are hoping to use their good relationship with Southampton to rubber stamp the deal.
The deal to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain will be similar in set-up to that of Walcott’s in an initial fee being paid, then further bonuses dependant on first team and international appearances.
The Saints were hoping to bring the player back to St Mary’s in order to continue his development, a move Arsene Wenger has been quick to quash.
He feels the player would be better suited to training with Arsenal and turning out when the time is right.
