Tuttomercatoweb.com reports a sensational potential double bid from Arsenal for Everton defensive pair Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines. The report suggests a bid of 30m Euros, or £26m will be forthcoming from Arsenal to test David Moyes’ resolve.
Arsenal have long been linked with the Jagielka and earlier this summer saw a £10m bid for the defender rejected by Everton. This comes after having unsuccessfully offered £12m the season before.
Baines too has long been on the Arsenal radar with Arsene Wenger even commented on the potential of a transfer during last January’s transfer window. Many had thought Wenger regarded Baines as a natural replacement for Gael Clichy, who left earlier this summer, but no bid has materialised.
David Moyes values both Jagielka and Baines greatly. Both England internationals, Moyes builds his team around he pair, along with Marouane Fellaini. If they are to be sold, they will certainly not be sold cheaply.
Despite the well-documented financial restraints at Goodison Park, David Moyes’ recent press statements have declared a willingness to fight through with the squad he has got, rather than cashing in big to reinvest. With money raised from any transfers almost certainly to be used to pay off the club”s debt, Moyes is very unlikely to relinquish two of his best players.
Moyes is also likely to take a dim view of such a low offer. Surely, any fee of less than £30m will not be taken seriously, and even then, the Scot would wish to negotiate the fee up. Having heavily critcized the timing of Manchester City’s successful bid for Joleon Lescott, Moyes is almost certain to reject a bid having just started the season.
