As Arsenal Talks Collapse Villas-Boas Steps In With The Real Deal?

After what seemed to have been a done deal, the Gunners’ interest in French international Yann M’Vila cooled down drastically after the Euros. With the defensive midfielder failing to impress his potential new club during his playing time in Poland the Ukraine, Wenger reportedly pulled the plug on any deal.

But now, 2 months after the 22 year old was said to have closed the deal with the North London side, their rivals Tottenham are looking to bring the French International to White Hart Lane.

The Metro has reported that Spurs and M’Vila have agreed terms and both parties are happy with the deal, but they just need to finalise the transfer fee before the deal can be confirmed. This could be the second time Spurs have bought an Arsenal target, with Villas-Boas’ new side securing the signature of 25 year old defender Jan Vertonghen, who moved from Ajax earlier in the window.

But could this story actually be true?! Are Tottenham about to sign Wenger’s sloppy seconds?

Personally, I think it would be a bad move. Whilst there is no doubt that the Rennes’ player is very talented, as demonstrated by Arsenal first being drawn to the defensive midfielder, his bad attitude is a major turn-off. With AVB being surrounded by a bunch of bad egos at Chelsea, which led to him under performing as manager, this is something which Villas-Boas must learn from, and a player with a negative attitude could easily disrupt good morale.

Also, with Alex Song rumoured to be the subject of a €15 million bid from Barcelona, Arsenal might have adapted the tactic of cooling interest in order to get the price tag much lower, and therefore being able to profit from the transfer.

The only factor which could suggest truth in this story is Villas-Boas’ set up in the pre-season USA tour. Playing the likes of Liverpool, New York Red Bulls and LA Galaxy, the Portuguese manager set up the team in a 4-2-3-1 formation. With the current squad containing Huddlestone, Sandro and Parker in this position, it would be very risky to only have these three who are naturally suited to being a defensive midfielder.

With Parker and Sandro set to miss the beginning of the season, and Huddlestone’s injuries always being an underlying problem, it would a huge gamble for Villas-Boas not to buy M’Vila.

Obviously, Tottenham need to heavily invest in this window before the season starts with the club only having Jermain Defoe as a striker. But it would be dangerous for Spurs not to strengthen their midfield too, with a lack of squad rotation being the cause of Tottenham’s under performance last season.

Playing 45 games last season for Rennes, it is obvious that he is a key player for the French side. But could he make an impact if he  signs for Spurs? Leave your comments below.
