The career of Joey Barton has certainly had plenty of talking points over the years, and now yet again he is in the headlines this time with his future in doubt at St. James Park.
Just when it looks as though he has finally tamed his behaviour (well almost), and found possibly his best form since he laced up his boots, it appears Newcastle United have failed to offer Barton a new contract that is set to expire next summer.
The player has admitted his loyalty to the toon army but claims the club are determined to replace him and has posted a statement on Twitter that reads the following…
“I will tell all when the time is right, basically they want a younger, better, cheaper player…………cant blame Mike [owner Mike Ashley] and Derek [managing director Derek Llambias] can you?” he said. “…….slight problem is, they don’t want to spend any money or pay any wages. Its genius really ha ha.
He goes on to explain his relationship with Alan Pardrew and refers to his team mates as “First class”.
After the season he has had on Tyneside, with some sensational displays on many occasions carrying the side through games and also proving a vital cog in the middle of the park, it’s surprising the magpies aren’t eager to keep hold of the feisty scouser.
According to the guardian Newcastle are set to sign Lille midfielder Yohan Cabaye for a fee of around £5 million, which would be a replacement for Barton who is receiving the brush off.
This just leaves the question… where next for Joey Barton? What club would take a gamble on him? Everton have been a constant name reappearing with the controversial midfielder and I’m sure the Evertonians wouldn’t have forgot Barton dropping his shorts and flashing his rear at the Goodison crowd, just another shocking act along the way in his, let’s say colourful career.
The list of incidents is never ending and In May 2008 Barton was finally sentenced to six months in prison for an assault during a night out in Liverpool city centre.
During his stint in jail he also received a four months suspended sentence for admitting actual bodily harm on his Manchester City TEAM MATE Ousmane Dabo, which ended his time at Eastland’s.
Newcastle took the gamble and it paid off, so who will be the next side to take the unpredictable loose cannon under their wing… And would you really want him at your club?
