Newcastle United may have been able to sign Miguel Almiron in the January transfer window, but the addition of the Paraguayan alone does not look like it will be enough to convince Rafael Benitez to extend his expiring contract.
As a result, owner Mike Ashley could now look to bring in further big additions as he attempts to keep Benitez at St. James’ Park.
According to Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder, Ashley has promised Benitez he will be able to sign another marquee signing if he puts pen to paper on a new deal.
That promise, however, might have just come too late, leaving Newcastle supporters asking the question of why has it taken this long for Ashley to act?
The Magpies’ squad is one that has needed significant investment since the club’s promotion to the Premier League, something Benitez has brought up on numerous occasions (Goal).
Yet the Spaniard’s message has only fallen on deaf ears, which is why Ashley now finds himself on the verge of losing his manager.
That being said, anything could happen between now and the end of the campaign with the promise of another Almiron-esque signing potentially swaying Benitez into making the decision supporters are hoping for.
Still, the Newcastle faithful will feel this whole mess and whatever consequence that comes after it could have so easily been avoided.
