Former Aston Villa star Gabriel Agbonlahor has urged Bjorn Engels to leave the club as soon as possible.
Some days ago, it was reported that Royal Antwerp and Anderlecht are potential destinations for Engels, who could be making a move away from Villa Park this month.
Agbonlahor wants Engels to leave
Agbonlahor was recently talking to Football Insider about Engels’ future at Aston Villa and he believes that the defender doesn’t have the pace to play in the Premier League. And on top of that, there is quite a bit of depth in the defensive department for Dean Smith’s men and that will make it tough for Engels to get regular football at Villa Park.
Should Villa sell Engels this summer?
When talking about the 26-year-old Belgian, Agbonlahor said:
“It’s time for him to move on. The problem with the Premier League now is you have to have pace in defence.
“Unless you’re an unbelievable defender and you can read the game unbelievably you need to have the pace at the back.
“That’s what Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause allow you. If they make a mistake they’ve got the pace to make up for it. If they’re left one-on-one they’ve got the pace to stop the attacker.”
Engels had joined Villa from French club Stade de Reims in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £7.20 million. This season though, the defender hasn’t played even once for Smith’s men and while he had suffered from an injury early in the season, he’s been on the bench in some recent games (as per Transfermarkt).
It has also been reported the defender could return to his boyhood side Club Brugge in the current January transfer window.
Villa should cut their losses on Engels
While Engels had started the 2019/20 season beside Tyrone Mings, he is behind Ezri Konsa and Kortney Hause in the pecking order this season, which is indicative of the fact that he isn’t as useful as he used to be.
He is currently valued at £5.85m and because of that, if Villa plan to sell Engels, they could still get a fee close to what they signed him for. So perhaps, it would make sense for Smith’s men to move the Belgian on this month – especially since he hasn’t played at all this season.
In other news, many Aston Villa fans have been delighted about the potential exit of one player – read more about it here.
