Alan Hutton believes that Conor Hourihane is undroppable after his performance against Norwich prior to the international break.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Villa defender praised Hourihane by saying that he felt he was a standout performer against the Canaries.
Hourihane scored and assisted at Carrow Road as the Villans thrashed Daniel Farke’s men 5-1, in a result that saw the club lift themselves out of the relegation zone and into 15th place.
Hutton said that the Republic of Ireland midfielder had been put in a difficult situation over the summer, due to the club signing the likes of Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba in midfield.
Minutes have been difficult to come by for Hourihane this term due to fierce competition for places in the first-team.
The 28-year-old has only started three league games for the West Midlands club so far, but could well line up from the off against Brighton on Saturday following his performance against Norwich before the international break.
“I think everyone knows what he is capable of,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“It’s been a difficult situation as they’ve brought in a few sitting midfielders and Conor I think, he’s in between that as he’s not quite a sitting midfielder or an out-and-out attacker.
“I think when they moved to a three in midfield, that suits him better in my opinion.
“He doesn’t moan when he’s not in the team, he just wants to prove that he should be playing and I think he has done.
“The other day (v Norwich), it was an absolute standout performance so I don’t think he can be left out for the next game (v Brighton).”
Hourihane has made 118 appearances for Aston Villa since joining the club from Barnsley in 2017. He was an influential member of the squad which earned promotion to the top-flight via the play-offs last season – scoring seven goals and providing 12 assists.
