Aston Villa: Alan Hutton expects Jonathan Kodjia to return to matchday squad

Aston Villa: Alan Hutton expects Jonathan Kodjia to return to matchday squad - Aston Villa

Jonathan Kodjia will be back involved with the Aston Villa matchday squad after the international break, that is according to Alan Hutton.

The Ivorian has featured just once all season for Dean Smith’s side, when he made a 16-minute cameo against Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day.

Since then he has been out due to a freak cheekbone injury which he sustained in a training ground accident. That has left the Villans short of centre-forward options in the opening weeks of the campaign, with Wesley and youngster Keinan Davis their only fit strikers.

However, prior to their 5-1 win at Norwich, Smith confirmed that Kodjia was nearing full fitness and Hutton believes that once he is available he will go straight into the matchday squad and could be an important player.

When asked whether the former Bristol City man would go into the squad, the ex-Villa right-back told Football Insider: “Yeah, I would say so. He gives you something different. He’s that kind of player that you could put on with 20 minutes to go and he could give you a bit of magic – cut in from the wing and bang in a screamer, I’ve seen him do it numerous times.

“He’s definitely a quality player, he can give you something a little bit different. I would have him there. You could need something like that to turn things around.”

Whilst he is unlikely to start, having Kodjia in the squad will certainly be a boost for Aston Villa.

Wesley has done very well in the team so far, scoring four times in eight Premier League appearances, but competition for places is always healthy and the return of Kodjia should keep the Brazilian on his toes.

The 29-year-old hasn’t had the best spell of his career at Villa, but has proven himself to be a prolific goalscorer in the past, most notably when he bagged 19 goals in the 2016/17 season at Bristol City.

He also chipped in with nine goals in Villa’s promotion campaign last term, and with games set to come thick and fast over the upcoming winter period, he may well be called upon when they need a goal.

Should Jack Grealish be in the England squad?
