Aston Villa fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have been sweating over the future of Ron Vlaar, having witnessed their captain’s superb performances for the Netherlands at the World Cup.
And Metro has some news that may give them a boost with Paul Lambert set to hold talks with the former Feyenoord defender in the hope of keeping him at Villa Park.
Southampton and Tottenham have both expressed an interest in the 29-year-old, who was one of the standout performers for Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands side that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Brazil.
But Paul Lambert remains hopeful that Vlaar will agree to sign an extension to his contract – which has just one year to run – after holding a brief but positive talk with his skipper at the weekend.
“Ron’s got another year still to go on his contract, it’s not as if he’s at the end of it,’ said Lambert.
“Once we get back I’ll sit with him, we’ll have a bit more time, but he loves it at Villa, that’s well known.
“He’s positive and raring to go. He’s looking forward to coming back so that’s a positive.”
