Aston Villa supporters would “fall in love” with Alfredo Morelos if they were to sign him in January, that is according to their former striker Darren Bent.
The Villans have been linked with a £20 million move for the Colombian in the winter transfer window as they look to bolster their attacking options.
Morelos has been a controversial character during his time at Rangers, largely due to his poor disciplinary record. Indeed, he picked up a ridiculous five red cards in the 2018/19 season.
But Bent believes that is part of the reason why fans love him, and insists that if he does move to Villa Park he will become an instant hit amongst the faithful.
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa striker said: “The Villa fans would love him. For whatever reason, fans, with this type of player, they never really look at the fact he might get sent off, that he’s a bit of a troublemaker. They just love him. They absolutely love him.
“Villa fans will fall in love with him. He works hard, he tries really, really hard. He is someone that I would call a test. There is always something going on around him. He knows where the goal is and he always scores goals.
“I’d love to see him in the Premier League and I think he’d be a great fit.”
On paper, the addition of Morelos would be a largely positive one if Villa pressed ahead and signed the Rangers centre-forward.
He has made a terrific start to the current season, netting 14 goals and providing five assists in 18 appearances so far (via Transfermarkt).
Added to that, he also looks to have calmed down a little bit and he is yet to be sent off this season, and hasn’t even received a yellow card in the Scottish Premiership after eight games.
As a promoted club, the aim for Dean Smith’s side this season is to stay up and scoring goals will be key in doing that. They have signed Brazilian striker Wesley who has done well so far, scoring four times in eight games, but having competition for him would be a good thing.
If Villa can get Morelos they will then have two more than capable strikers, which could give them the edge over some of the other bottom half Premier League teams in the battle for survival.
Should Jack Grealish be in the England squad?
