Aston Villa have now settled down under Steve Bruce after a rather frantic start to the summer transfer window, with promotion to the Premier League still in their sights.
The Villains are a force to be reckoned with in the Championship and they won’t let anyone get in their way after suffering the heartbreak of defeat in the play-off final last year. Indeed, it looks as if Steve Bruce is still trying to strengthen his squad, as according to The Sunday Mirror (August 19th, page 64) (via HITC), Aston Villa are keen on signing Matt Targett on loan.
Aston Villa are keen on signing Southampton left-back Matt Targett.
And, it’s believed that the Saints are willing to loan him out.
Indeed, it looked as if Aston Villa would secure the services of Joe Bryan from Bristol City, but a last-minute approach from Premier League side Fulham ended Villa’s hopes.
But, securing Matt Targett would arguably be an even bigger coup as the Englishman was sensational last season on loan at Craven Cottage and played a massive part in their promotion push.
Interestingly, the Saints are said to have rejected an offer worth more than £15 million from Fulham on deadline day
The Villains will be desperate to secure a full-back before the loan window shuts as they are currently lacking quality and depth in that particular area.
Indeed, Matt Targett established himself as arguably the best left-back in the Championship last season and could take Villa to the next level this season.
And, with Fulham stealing Joe Bryan from the clutches of Steve Bruce, supporters would get some satisfaction from seeing Targett rock up on loan at Villa Park after Southampton reportedly rejected an offer worth more than £15 million from the Cottagers.
