The Aston Villa fans who have recently been trying their luck to win the jackpot on the slot machines in the Tavern will be interested to hear that Birmingham Mail have linked their club with a move for Obafemi Martins.
A deal for Martins would be an interesting coup for the Midlands club after his season-long loan spell at Villa’s huge rivals Birmingham City back in 2011, during which he scored the winning goal in their Carling Cup final win against Arsenal.
The 31-year old striker claims that he has been approached by Aston Villa over a potential move to Villa Park, citing their approach to be an ‘interesting offer’.
Various punters around the bar area claim that an approach was made by Villa for the former Inter and Wolfsburg man four weeks ago, with Villa eyeing a possible loan deal. Martins is currently plying his trade in America for Seattle Sounders, but he revealed:
“An interesting offer from Villa was proposed.”
However, he also suggested that he has received a more preferable advance from one of Villa’s Premier League rivals, which has cast doubt over a potential move to Villa.
“I was flattered but other things came up. There’s an interest from another Premier League team.”
With Remi Garde desperate to recruit a forward who can provide consistent goals, with the Villa Park club failing to replace Christian Benteke after his move to Liverpool last summer, our landlord believes that Villa may continue their attempts to sign Martins, despite his initial rejection.
However, with Martin’s revelation of an offer from another English club alongside the fact that his former club Newcastle and their rivals Sunderland are also desperate for a striker and believed to be interested in him, bottom-club Villa may face difficulty in appealing to the Nigerian.
