Aston Villa are nearing the completion of a £15 million deal for Manchester City midfielder Douglas Luiz, according to Football Insider.
The 21-year-old Brazilian spent last season on loan at Girona and started 16 matches, coming on as a substitute seven times.
He is a defensively-minded midfielder, who made 1.5 tackles (per WhoScored), 0.9 interceptions, 1 clearance and 0.3 blocks per game while in Catalonia. He also made 34.5 passes per game with a success rate of 84.5%.
Having somebody of this style would be useful for Villa as it would allow Conor Hourihane to move further forward when he plays.
Hourihane made 1.4 tackles, 0.4 interceptions, 1.1 clearances and 0.2 blocks as the most defensive of Villa’s three midfielders last season, which is only slightly inferior to Luiz’s numbers.
However, the eight goals and 11 assists he made shows he is much more effective going forward and having someone like Luiz, who would be able to take more of the defensive burden, could help him to make an impact going forward this season despite the step up in opposition.
Going off his statistics and the fact he did enough to make Manchester City take notice, Luiz seems to be an exciting talent who, at 21-years-old, still has plenty of room to grow and improve as a player.
It is important for Villa to bring someone in who can patrol the holding midfield area and while there are other options who have been considered, the Brazilian would certainly be a good recruit.
