Aston Villa have confirmed that Scott Hogan is heading out on a season-long loan to Stoke City.
This is the Republic of Ireland international’s second loan in as many seasons, after he spent the second half of the last campaign at Sheffield United.
Before going out on loan to Bramall Lane, Hogan had only made six substitute appearances in the Championship for Villa last season, having failed to start a single game, while he also didn’t make any goal contributions, as per WhoScored.
He did slightly better at Bramall Lane as he helped United towards automatic promotion, starting five games and coming on as a substitute in three, scoring twice and assisting one goal.
The Irishman has previously shown some ability in a Villa shirt though, having made a combined 28 starts and 23 substitute appearances in the two campaigns prior, scoring seven goals and assisting four.
His decline in Villa minutes would not have been likely to slow down if he had stayed for the 2019/20 campaign, especially after Wesley’s arrival at Villa Park.
With Wesley being backed up by Jonathan Kodjia, there would be no need to have Hogan around as he wouldn’t get much game time, so it is understandable they have let him leave.
This is also best for Hogan, as it means he can actually get minutes again, in the hope he can show the form that earned him his move to Villa in the first place.
