The Aston Villa fans have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern since their side lost the promotion play-off final against Fulham at Wembley, and recent reports suggest things could be set to go from bad to worse for the club.
Steve Bruce’s side were always second-favourites to return to the Premier League via the playoffs once the season reached its conclusion, but that has not prevented the supporters from feeling bitterly disappointed by their result last Saturday. The Villans suffered a 1-0 defeat against Fulham on an afternoon where they created plenty of chances to draw level.
Jack Grealish (valued at £4.5 million by Transfermarkt) was at the heart of Villa’s attacking play in the final-third, but he was unable to take any of the multitude of chances which presented themselves throughout the afternoon. However, Manchester United remain eager to sign Grealish this summer according to The Sun, despite the lack of composure he displayed last weekend.
Whether United’s interest is genuine or not remains to be seen, but there is certain to be interest throughout the Premier League after a season of significant development from Grealish. Although it will be difficult for Villa to compete with the lure of the Premier League, Steve Bruce and the club’s hierarchy simply have to convince the 22-year-old to remain at Villa Park this summer, as their failure to do so will have a detrimental impact on their ambitions for the new season.
With a player of Grealish’s quality, flair and determination in their midfield, Villa will have a fantastic opportunity to build upon the progress they made this season and seal promotion automatically next time round, but without him their chances will be significantly reduced.
Although it’s taken Grealish time to mature and begin living up to his huge potential, it appears he has turned a significant corner in his development this season, so it’s crucial that Villa convince him to stay with the club for one more season, otherwise their dream of promotion will be left in tatters.
