Aston Villa supporters are feeling a little better here in the Football Transfer Tavern, having heard the reports from the Express that claim former Manchester United and Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov is on the brink of a switch to Villa Park.
It has been a tough summer for Villa and manager ‘Tactics’ Tim Sherwood, with club captain Fabian Delph and star striker Christian Benteke both already having left the club for Manchester City and Liverpool respectively.
Sherwood is desperately seeking more firepower ahead of the new season, and has been boosted by news from Berbatov’s close friend Stiliyan Petrov, who reckons the Bulgarian fancies one more crack at the Premier League.
Reports suggest the 34-year-old has held talks with Villa representatives over the phone, having become a free-agent after leaving French moneybags Monaco at the end of last season.
“He’ll travel to Birmingham on Monday,” a source close to the player said to the Express.
“He held several talks on the phone but the Villa bosses want some ‘straight’ talks.”
“If they reach a final agreement, it’s possible Berbatov to have a medical on Tuesday or Wednesday,” the source added.
Berbatov has been linked with Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen and Premier League new-boys Bournemouth, however Villa are understood to be his preferred destination.
