Aston Villa should land Man United’s £22.5m-rated defender following promotion

The Aston Villa fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling apprehensive ahead of the play-offs this month.

Steve Bruce’s side are set to have one final stab at reaching the Premier League this month when they face the challenge of navigating beyond the playoffs and into the top-flight after just a two year absence. Achieving promotion via that particular avenue has never been an easy task, but the resident Villans propping up our bar believe they have the quality to achieve their ultimate ambition this season.

If Villa achieve promotion to the top-flight, they will need to dip into the transfer market and invest heavily in new acquisitions to ensure their status is preserved. However, recent reports from The Sun suggest they might not need to splash the cash to secure the services of a player who possesses plenty of potential to succeed in English football, namely Victor Lindelof (valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt).

According to the report, Jose Mourinho is willing to listen to loan offers for the Swedish international this summer following a disappointing debut season for the Red Devils. Plenty was expected of Lindelof when he arrived at the club in a big-money deal from Benfica last summer, but so far the weight of expectation has had a negative impact on the quality of his performances.

Individual mistakes have tarnished his reputation, but it must be considered that he is only 23-years-old and playing for a club of Manchester United’s stature is undoubtedly a daunting challenge for a player who is finding his feet in English football.

Every aspect Lindelof’s form has been intensely scrutinised, whilst the positive contributions he has made have largely been overlooked. At a club like Aston Villa where the expectations are significantly lower, Lindelof would have a brilliant opportunity to resurrect his career and prove his doubters wrong next season.

With that in mind, Bruce should make an offer to sign Lindelof on loan this summer in order to bolster his defensive options following promotion.
