Aston Villa supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern were breathing a massive sign of relief last night after Wigan Athletic’s 4-1 defeat to Arsenal ensured that it would be the Latics relegated to the Championship next season.
Now that Premier League survival has been secured attention has already been turned to possible transfer targets for Paul Lambert to strengthen a squad that at times this season looked well out of their depth.
Today’s Daily Express reports that Villa have joined the hunt for £4 million Peterborough United star Dwight Gayle with Lambert ready to make his move now that Premier League football is confirmed.
Harry Redknapp’s QPR are also understood to be tracking the 22-year-old striker who has netted 13 goals in his 27 games since joining from Dagenham and Redbridge in January.
However Villa are ready to step up their interest as Lambert looks to rebuild his side and a possible signing would fit his remit of bringing in talented young Football League players. While the English striker would love to have a chance to play in the Premier League and following his team’s relegation the Posh may be ready to sell this summer.
