The Aston Villa fans have been absolutely delighted with their side’s form in The Championship so far this season, but they are slightly concerned by Scott Hogan’s goal-scoring record.
Steve Bruce’s side have their eyes firmly set on an automatic promotion place after recording 9 wins from their previous 11 fixtures. The mouth-watering prospect of returning the top-flight is one which the resident Villans propping up our bar in the tavern simply cannot help but get excited about.
Indeed, there is still plenty of football to be played this season, so the supporters aren’t getting ahead of themselves just yet, but a forward-thinking attitude with regards to summer transfers is still being adopted by the optimistic supporters who believe their side will clinch promotion this season.
Achieving promotion to the Premier League would undoubtedly usher in a handful of new faces to Villa Park, and one area in which they are in desperate need of strengthening is at centre-forward. The top-flight has consistently proven that the presence of a goal-scorer can prove to be the difference between relegation and survival, so it’s vital that Villa bolster their forward-line next summer if they manage to achieve promotion.
Scott Hogan has spearheaded Villa’s attack for the majority of the season so far and endured a tough time finding the back of the net for the most part. The Irishman hit form at the perfect time for his club in January by scoring 4 goals in as many games during the opening month of 2018 to convince his manager that further additions in his position were far from necessary. However, a promotion would certainly result in the arrival of attacking talent to challenge Hogan for a starting berth.
Villa will require a clinical striker with a poachers instincts to ensure that they avoid an immediate return to The Championship, and one player who fits the bill is Aleksandar Mitrovic (valued at £7.2 million by Transfermarkt)) who is currently playing his trade on loan at Fulham. The Serbian international fell massively out of favour with Rafa Benitez at Newcastle this season before moving on loan to Fulham in January.
Since arriving at Craven Cottage, Mitrovic has been something of a revelation. Mitrovic has scored 5 goals from 5 starts for the club, all of which arrived against sides who are well in contention for promotion this season. Doubts over Mitrovic’s attitude continue to loom large, but his performances for Fulham so far suggest that he is beginning to mature and focus solely on the quality of his performances.
Villa will need to sign a new striker next season to solve their goal-scoring crisis, and based on current form, they would be wise to make Mitrovic their number one target in the summer transfer window.
