Aston Villa are there or thereabouts in terms of fighting for a playoff spot in the Championship, and manager Dean Smith will be hoping for a good second half of the campaign to ensure a top six finish.
Smith will be hoping for a hugely successful January transfer window, although the worry surrounding Tammy Abraham’s future will be something he wants to get sorted ASAP.
However, even if Abraham does end up moving away from the Villans and back to Chelsea, this should not stop Smith from acting in the market and adding players to his squad in other positions.
And one area of the field we at the Tavern feel could be improved is in the middle of the park.
That’s why we think signing Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack could well prove to be a shrewd piece of business by the club, with the Gers man impressing of late under Steven Gerrard’s resurgent side.
Valued only at £765k on Transfermarkt, Jack is well within the price range of what Villa might be looking to part ways with in the window, and he would add some serious bite and energy to the middle of the park.
Manager Gerrard is undoubtedly getting the best out of Jack, but there is no reason he should not be able to replicate that form in the Championship, with Villa the ideal sort of destination for the Scot.
At 26, Jack will be coming into his prime in the coming seasons, and could well prove to be a brilliant piece of business for Villa if they can pull it off.
