Former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has said that he thinks Jack Grealish will leave the club this summer in an interview with Football Insider.
24-year-old midfielder Grealish has burst on to the scene this season in the Premier League, arguably having his best season in a Claret and Blue shirt, netting seven goals and providing six assists in the process.
Playing consistently well for the Midlands club, the former England U21 international has gained interest from a number of clubs of late, including Manchester United.
Villa, who sit 19th in the Premier League table as things stand, will undoubtedly be keen to hang on to top-flight football and potentially look to entice Grealish to remain at the club.
If Dean Smith’s side do fail to stop relegation to the Championship, Hutton believes that Grealish would find it ‘impossible’ to play for the club.
“It depends on how Aston Villa are going to stand on it – are they going to stand tough and say no, that’s it? A lot is going to depend on what league they’re in. There is no way Jack can continue playing at Villa if Villa get relegated, it’s impossible,” Hutton said to Football Insider.
“It’s going to be a very tough decision, I know it’s going to be tough for him, he’s Villa through and through, his family are Villa through and through so it’s going to be hard.
“For his future, he deserves to be at a top-four club in my opinion.”
Villa players, including Grealish, returned to the club’s Bodymoor Heath training ground earlier this week looking to prepare themselves for a potential return to football amid the pandemic.
On the evidence of his performances and stats for this season, Grealish should be playing at a higher standard, competing in Europe, and making himself a regular for Gareth Southgate’s England side.
In fairness, the Villa man has almost done the latter, but that has been down to his level of performances alongside a team of struggling players.
Whilst a move to Manchester United has been mentioned in the media, you do wonder if he would suit the Red Devils or be better off playing for someone like Liverpool or Chelsea.
One thing is for sure, and Hutton has hit the nail on the head – he can’t stay at Villa past the summer, especially if they go down.
