Former Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton has been extremely impressed with the performances of the current incumbent of that position, Frederic Guilbert.
The Frenchman joined the club from Caen and has been a regular of late for them in the Premier League, starting their last 10 matches (Transfermarkt).
Is Wesley an upgrade on Tammy Abraham?
And his displays so far have earned him praise from Hutton, who believes that he looks a capable full-back both in defence and attack.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton said: “He’s done well since he’s come in, good pace which helps out, especially in the Premier League.
“You need to be quick, especially playing against some of these players and it’s going to be difficult, you’re going to have difficult times but he’s handled himself well.
“Not only that, he’s got himself forward, he’s been involved in the attacking play as well. He looks very good, he looks like a good player that’s come in and done well. Hopefully, he can build on that, continue to play well and go from strength to strength. I really like him as a player.”
Guilbert has certainly made a strong start to life at Villa Park and, as Hutton points out, he has been good both offensively and defensively.
Added to that he has also helped Villa keep two clean sheets, whilst also averaging 2.4 tackles and interceptions per game and 2 clearances per game, giving him a WhoScored rating for the season so far of a solid 7.05.
He has certainly made that position his own this season, and Dean Smith will hope that he can keep his strong performances up as the campaign heads into the busy Christmas period.
