Aston Villa have confirmed that Andre Green is heading out for a season-long loan to Preston North End.
The 21-year-old spent time on loan with Portsmouth last campaign, before returning to Villa and playing a part in their promotion push, as per Transfermarkt.
Villa have signed wingers Jota, Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet, which would have made it more difficult for the academy graduate to get Premier League minutes.
He played 21 games for Aston Villa last season across the Championship and play-offs, scoring once and assisting one more, as per Transfermarkt.
In total he has managed 48 games for Villa, with 27 of those being made as a substitute and has scored twice, assisting once.
Considering the level of competition for places in the side following new recruits’ arrivals, especially with Trezeguet and El Ghazi playing on the left side where Green is most comfortable, it is best for his development to go out on loan and get games, as they would be hard to come by in a Villa shirt.
Indeed, El Ghazi is a player Dean Smith holds in very high regard. “Anwar proved to everybody at Wembley how good a player he can be for Aston Villa. He’s ready for the step up to the Premier League and he’s a young player who has an awful lot of potential,”. The Villa boss told the club’s official website after El Ghazi joined permanently back in June.
This was arguably to be expected considering the signings that have been made, but if he succeeds at Preston and others fail in the Premier League under Smith, there is a chance he could come back to challenge for a place in the Villa side next season.
The main question now regards what to do about his contract situation, as it will be expiring next summer.
