It’s been a strange season for the Aston Villa fans in the Transfer Tavern, who started the season with such optimism following a complete overhaul upon their thoroughly dismal relegation from the Premier League.
Despite bringing in big names such as Ross McCormack, Mile Jedinak and James Chester – coupled with the appointment of Roberto Di Matteo as the club’s new boss – things really haven’t worked out yet.
Whether or not anyone truly expected Steve Bruce to clean up a mess left rotting in the halls at Villa Park for years now straight away and a lead side gridlocked in the traffic of the second tier’s midtable to a promotion charge is neither nor there now, though the fact he’s making signings ahead of NEXT term is a huge sign of progression.
Having landed the likes of Henri Lansbury and James Bree so far, it seems Villa are doing what they should have done last year, building a squad entirely capable of winning the Championship. These are sensible signings, ones that supplement the likes of Jack Grealish, Jedinak and company in a squad, who on paper, should be right up there in the title chase next season.
With Bruce in charge, the club FINALLY seem to be learning from the type of mistakes that led them to, as things stand, 13th position in the Championship. Perhaps the deals aren’t as headline-grabbing as the ones in the summer, but they could be promotion clinching next time around.
