Aston Villa have confirmed on Twitter that Birkir Bjarnason’s contract has been terminated by mutual consent.
The Iceland international will now be free to find himself a new club for the 2019/20 campaign.
The midfielder started 11 Championship games last season, coming off the bench six times, scoring twice, as per WhoScored.
However, he didn’t even make the bench for any of Villa’s three play-off matches which earned the club promotion to the Premier League.
Considering how little he played last season, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he has been allowed to leave this summer, especially after the arrivals of Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba – who are both likely to feature predominantly in a central or holding midfield role, where Bjarnason operated last campaign.
It is for the best that Villa have let the Icelandic midfielder leave, as he would have found it difficult to get into the team.
This now means that Bjarnason will now be able to go and find a club where he will actually be able to get onto the pitch and make an impact, while the club have stronger options to pick from.
