Aston Villa have made a £15m bid for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to Football Insider.
Phillips has rejected a contract extension offered by Leeds due to the terms, but it is said the Championship side have turned down Villa’s offer and intend to keep Phillips at Elland Road.
If Phillips was to join Villa, he would be one of three new signings likely to be battling it out for the holding midfield spot – alongside Marvelous Nakamba and Douglas Luiz, though it is the Englishman and Zimbabwean who are arguably the most natural, with Luiz’s main strength being dribbling, as per WhoScored.
Phillips’ main strengths are passing and tackling, which are ideal for a defensive midfielder to have, especially in a team such as Dean Smith’s who play an expansive style, as indicated by the shape shown on Total Football Analysis.
This means that he would be able to influence the game both on and off the ball, with another Total Football Analysis article highlighting Phillips was Leeds’ third-highest passer and made the most tackles of anyone in the side last season.
Nakamba’s tackling is cited as very strong on WhoScored, while his passing, concentration and ball interception are also seen as strengths.
In last season’s Champions League, Nakamba made 4.4 tackles, 3 interceptions and 1.8 clearances per game, while completing 84% of his passes.
This shows that both players have well-rounded games that could adapt to Villa’s style of play well.
If Phillips signs for Villa it will be very intriguing to see who will be picked as the club’s main defensive midfielder.
While it would give Smith a dilemma having him at Villa Park, it would certainly be a good one to have, so they should carry on with their efforts to sign the 23-year-old.
