Aston Villa left it late to get one particular deal across the line in the January transfer window.
According to a report by Sky Sports, Frederic Guilbert has completed a switch to The Villans but will not join the Championship until the summer.
The defender will remain with current club Caen on loan until the end of the season as they look to compete in Ligue One.
Dean Smith was thought to be keen to add some depth to his squad and the 24-year-old could be ideal for the club next season.
However, with the player remaining at Caen until the summer, the Championship side will have to make do without him.
The Villans are pushing for a place in the playoffs this season and have started to mount a serious charge after a rather disappointing start to the campaign.
Guilbert has been capped at the France Under-21 international level and could be a great addition for Smith’s side.
He has experience of playing at one of the nation’s top clubs in Girondins de Bordeaux and has impressed with his performances for Caen this season.
Villa may have been able to benefit from having him in their squad this season as they look to win promotion, however, they will have to make do without him for six months.
