Former Aston Villa striker Darius Vassell has been talking about club captain Jack Grealish and saying that he needs to move to a better club sooner rather than later in order to fulfil his potential.
Apart from a loan spell at Notts County, per Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old has been at Villa Park for his whole football career, and has supported them since youth.
Since the club’s promotion, he has taken his game to the next level, and has already produced his best tally for goal contributions at the club with nine games left to go. So far he has seven goals and six assists. Indeed, his performances this campaign have seen him linked with Manchester United, as per the Sun, and with such links, it has left many wondering whether he will move in the summer if the Villans are relegated.
They currently sit 19th in the league but are only two points away from safety, per BBC Sport.
When speaking to Stadium Astro about the midfielder’s future, Vassell said: “I always get asked about Jack Grealish’s situation. I want him to stay through supporting Villa – he’s one of our own.
“But he’s so good now, where could he end up if he went to a better team with better players? Is it right to hold him back?
“If you look at history, you’ve got Gareth Barry and James Milner who left for City. Top quality players went on to bigger and better things.”
Vassell is right, despite the fact fans may not want to hear it. Indeed, Grealish is excelling in England’s top flight, and he has been involved in 38% of Villa’s 34 goals, via Sofascore, in the division this season.
If he does leave it will leave the club in a difficult situation as they are so reliant on him, also proven by the fact he leads the way in attacking metrics (per WhoScored) such as shots per game, key passes per game and fouls won over the same period.
Clearly, the attacking midfielder has shown so far this season that he can perform against the very best, so it would be interesting to see if he could become an even better footballer if he made the next step and played for one of the best teams in England.
Villa fans, would you be ok with Grealish leaving? Comment below!
