Former Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has admitted he feels the club would have been relegated by now if it was not for club captain Jack Grealish.
The 24-year-old midfield ace has been impressive during the 2019/20 campaign, contributing nine goals and eight assists in all competitions. The former England under-21 international’s form has not halted Villa’s drop into the bottom three, though, sitting 19th as things stand in the Premier League.
Having played a huge part in Villa’s promotion from the Championship last season with six goals and eight assists, Grealish will undoubtedly be hoping he can continue his fine form when football returns in a bid to keep his boyhood club in the top flight.
Speaking to Football Insider, former Villa man Bent said about the midfielder: “He’s been absolutely brilliant, he’s carried Aston Villa, I’m sure if it wasn’t for him, Aston Villa would have been relegated ages ago if it hadn’t been for Jack Grealish carrying the team.”
It’s hard not to agree with Bent’s comments on Grealish and Villa’s problems, for the midfielder has provided flair, goals, assists and, as noted by Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, a general desire and passion towards the cause.
If Villa manage to stay up, question marks over the midfielder’s future will certainly arise and it will be down to manager Dean Smith, if he is still in charge, to ensure that someone with a similar quality is signed to replace him if he is tempted elsewhere, with Manchester United reportedly lurking.
