Former Aston Villa striker Darren Bent believes an unlikely Premier League comeback for Emmanuel Adebayor at Villa Park could be a good thing if he works hard for the team.
Would you like to see Aston Villa sign a new striker in January?
Stick with Wesley
Villa are entering the second half of the campaign amid a striking crisis with Wesley out for the remainder of the season after damaging knee ligaments in their win at Burnley earlier this month.
With Dean Smith rumoured to be on the lookout for a solution to his attacking woes this January, Bent thinks signing free agent Adebayor, who has been linked in recent days (via Daily Mirror), could be the answer as Villa search for a way to maintain their top-flight status.
However, speaking to Football Insider, Bent insisted that such a move would only pay off if Adebayor puts a shift in.
He said: “It depends on what Adebayor you’re getting; we know he’s got all the ability as we’ve seen before, it just depends which Adebayor shows up.
“Is it the Adebayor who shows up, works hard and plays to show he’s still got it? If that Adebayor shows up, I’m all for it.”
The inconsistency that Adebayor has shown throughout his career validates Bent’s concerns. With Villa presumably looking for goals in the months to come, it is unclear whether Adebayor would be the answer.
He last recorded double figures in terms of goals in the Premier League back in the 2013/14 campaign for Spurs, while he did manage 21 in his first 41 Turkish top-flight appearances after his career in England had dwindled.
However, he scored just four times last season and is now without a club despite moving in the summer.
Although, surely a free transfer would be of interest to Villa having broken their club record to bring in Wesley back in June.
So there are certainly potential upshots to recruiting the 35-year-old, though Bent is probably right to highlight the sizeable risk a move might entail.
