Former England international Darren Bent believes that Marvelous Nakamba could miss out on a place in the starting 11 against Newcastle United on Monday due to the return of Jack Grealish.
According to The Athletic journalist Gregg Evans, Grealish is set to return to first-team action against the Magpies after missing Villa’s last two Premier League matches through injury.
That means that one of the midfielders who featured in their 2-1 defeat against Wolves in their most recent game is likely to be dropped and Bent believes that Nakamba is the most likely to lose his place.
When discussing who will be dropped from the starting 11 to make room for Grealish, Bent told Football Insider: “Marvelous, I think. I like Douglas Luiz, I think he’s a good player, great technique on the ball and he’s been playing really well.
“For me, it would be Douglas Luiz and Jack Grealish in the middle of the park because I think they’re better suited to each other – and of course John McGinn.”
Bent may well be correct with his prediction, against Wolves a couple of weeks ago Nakamba was hooked after 68 minutes of the match by Dean Smith whilst Douglas Luiz played the full 90 minutes, despite the stats suggesting that the Zimbabwean was having a better game (WhoScored).
That would indicate that Luiz has pushed his way ahead of Nakamba in the pecking order, meaning that the latter could be in line for the chop.
One thing is for sure, it’s surely unlikely to be John McGinn who is axed given he has been their star man this season with three goals and two assists to his name already (Transfermarkt).
