Aston Villa: Fans agree with Stan Collymore tweet on paying staff - Aston Villa

Loads of Aston Villa fans have been left agreeing with Stan Collymore’s verdict on what the club should do with regards to paying their staff at this time.

Football in England is enduring an unprecedented period at the moment with the game suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic (Sky Sports). As a result, clubs have been forced to make decisions on what they do with their staff.

Up until now there have been differing strategies. Leeds United’s players, coaching staff and senior management have opted to take a voluntary wage deferral in order to ensure that the club’s non-football staff get their wages in full for the foreseeable future (BBC Sport).

However others, including Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, have opted to utilise the government’s job retention scheme which will see their staff placed on temporary leave and only receiving 80% of their salaries (BBC Sport).

Collymore has given his opinion on what the Villans, a club he played for between 1997-2000, should do with their staff. He thinks that they should not follow the lead of the likes of Liverpool in furloughing people and instead has called for their wealthy owners to pay workers in full during this time.

Many Villa fans have been responding to their ex-player, with the majority in agreement with him. However, one highlighted that chief executive Christian Purslow may advise the club to do otherwise. Here is what some had to say on Twitter…
